Immelman, Fasth join prestigious Sun City golf challenge

2007-11-13 00:00

Immelman, who played in his first Nedbank Golf Challenge last year, was the first alternate when the field was first released, and gets his chance in the starting line-up after the withdrawal of Sergio Garcia, who has announced an immediate four-month break from competitive golf.

Sweden's Fasth, who has moved confidently into the world's top 20 this year, replaces defending champion Jim Furyk, who has been advised by his medical team to withdraw from golf for the remainder of the year due to a neck injury.

The invitation process for the event, known as “Africa's Major”, is based on the world rankings after the completion of the year's fourth Major championship, the PGA. At that point, Immelman and Fasth were just outside the “invitation zone”.

While disappointed to have lost the participation of two past champions in Furyk and Garcia, tournament director Alastair Roper was happy that he was able to replace them with two top-ranked players who will command interest from fans that attend the event. - OC.
