Impi face daunting Collegians clash

2014-07-24 00:00

AFTER their match versus College Rovers was postponed last time out, UKZN Impi have another daunting prospect when they take on log leaders Durban Collegians at 8.30 pm tonight on the Pietermaritzburg campus in the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville.

Durban Collegians outplayed Amanzimtoti 31-0 at the weekend and have one hand on the Fidelity Security Premier Division’s Moor Cup trophy with just two rounds to go. Indeed, if DBN Collegians get five points against seventh-placed Impi, they will have wrested the Cup away from Rovers. The Durban Collegians and Impi second teams kick off at 7 pm at Peter Booysen.

Meanwhile, PMB Collegians travel to Hutchinson Park in Amanzimtoti on Saturday and have a 3.30 pm date with fifth-placed Toti, who have impressed so much in this their first season at Premier Division level.

PMB Collegians have been their own worst enemies this season, in that their quality of play is much better than in previous seasons but the finishing off of the possession they are getting has been their undoing.

And it was the case last time out at Woodburn when the red, black and white dominated against third-placed Crusaders but weren’t good enough to turn that quality ball into sufficient points and the Durban North side escaped with an 18-13 win, this after Saders had led 15-5 at half-time, making good use of the scraps they managed to get.

To be fair, Collegians’ defence was woeful at times and it cost them dearly, while unforced errors were also a concern.

A rueful Carel Nel, who has done so much to turn PMB Collegians into such an exciting, attractive side to watch, told The Witness directly after the match that as the coach he had seen too many faults in his side’s play to warrant anything less than yet another disappointing defeat.

“There were just too many mistakes, bad passing cost us — we didn’t stick to our structures,” said Nel. “If we dominate territory and possession like we have been but don’t finish accurately by getting over that try line, we are not going to win games like this.”

Saturday’s match against Toti should be a cracker, as PMB Collegians will be desperate to make amends, but Toti at home are a very difficult side.

Meanwhile, Woodburn will play host to the Sharks U19 and U21 sides next Friday when they take on the Golden Lions. The U19s will kick off at 3.15 pm and the U21s at 5 pm.
