Impi have one last bite at the cherry

2014-04-07 00:00

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi will have one last bite at the cherry as they aim to qualify for next year’s Varsity Cup.

John Mitchell’s Impi lost the Varsity Shield final against the Central University of Technology Ixias last week to miss out on automatic promotion to the Varsity Cup. Today they take on the University of Johannesburg, who finished second from bottom in the Varsity Cup, in a promotion/relegation play-off in Potchefstroom.

After finishing second last year, UJ, who were expected to have another good season, surprised everyone by finishing in seventh place, one spot above the relegated Wits University side.

The Impi have already been boosted by the news that the Baby Boks have released two of their players, scrumhalf Cameron Wright and lock Gideon Koegelenberg, for the game against a UJ side that has a number of players with Vodacom Cup experience.

It was not all doom and gloom for the Impi as skipper Lwazi Ngcungama won the tournament’s Forward That Rocks award, while winger Shayne Makombe was named Back That Rocks.

The game in Potchefstroom will be the curtain raiser to the main Varsity Cup final between the home side the North West University Pukke and the University of Cape Town Ikeys.
