Impi tackle tough CUT in Bloem

2012-03-05 00:00

THE Varsity Shield is a tough rugby competition and it doesn’t get any easier for the University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi as they prepare to tackle last year’s champions the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein tonight.

The Impi lost 30-10 to CUT in the first round at the Peter Booysen Sports Park on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

The heartening news for the PMB lads was their last outing just a fortnight ago, when they outscored log leaders Wits by two tries to one, but the accurate goalkicking of the visiting flyhalf proved their undoing.

Another gutsy performance coupled with an awareness that counter-attacks by the opposition have led to much of their undoing this season, will stand the UKZN lads in good stead.

Varsity Cup log in brief (played 5 unless stated): 1 Wits 18 points; 2 Western Cape 16 pts; 3 CUT 14 pts; 4 Fort Hare 9 pts; 5 (4) UKZN 0 pts.

Remaining UKZN matches: Mar 12 vs Wits (away); Mar 19 vs Fort Hare (PMB); Mar 26 vs Western Cape (PMB).

UKZN results: UKZN 10 CUT 30; Fort Hare 36 UKZN 21; Western Cape 61 UKZN 10; UKZN 10 Wits 18.
