Impressive Eston field

2008-07-25 00:00

An impressive field is expected for the sixth Illovo Eston MTB Challenge at the Eston Club tomorrow morning.

With over 2 000 riders already pre-entered, and the organisers expecting another 1 000 late entries, the race promises to be the biggest one-day MTB event in the country.

SA’s leading riders are confirmed for the 75 km Illovo Marathon, with the possible absence of both 2007 defending champions Burry Stander and Yolande Speedy due to their Beijing Olympic commitments. R10 000 prize money for men and women each is up for grabs.

The men’s race will be hotly contested by Kevin Evans and Brandon Stewart, 2006 winner and runner-up respectively, and a host of others including Mannie Heymans, fresh from his excellent showing at the World Championships, as well as Johan van Zyl, JP Pearton, Rourke Croesser and Craig Paul. Tania Raats will be leading the women’s challenge against the evergreen Shawna Thunder and team MTN Energade’s Carla Rowley.

The 40 km aQuelle Classic sees the return of the top three finishers in 2007 — Bryce Munro, Timothy Stark and Jedson Tooms. They will be joined by Shaun-Nick Bester, winner in 2006 and son of the well-known Nick Bester.

Candice Neethling will be defending her 2007 crown against strong 2007 finisher Jacolene May and Shale Exelby.

For those who haven’t entered yet, late entries will be taken at registration at the Eston Club this afternoon from 3 pm and tomorrow morning from 6 am. The 75 km marathon starts at 8 am and the 40 km classic at 8.30 am.

For the more leisurely riders, the 18 km Tala Family Fun Ride, which starts at 9 am, is an excellent way to spend a beautiful morning in the country. The 10 km Ola Milky Lane ride is the perfect event for youngsters.
