Improved Affies take on College

2010-05-29 00:00

FOUR schools are playing Gauteng opposition today, with Maritzburg College and Kearsney at home against Affies and St Stithians respectively, and Hilton and Westville away. Hilton will be in Pretoria against St Albans and Westville in Johannesburg against KES.

Since Affies built their own artificial surface two years ago, they have improved dramatically and they could mount a strong challenge against College, undoubtedly the top side in the province and one of the better sides in the country. College have, however, lost away games against Pretoria Boys’ and Grey College, after beating them both earlier at the Glenwood Centenary Festival.

Affies lost by a single goal against Pretoria BHS and College need to be focused in the game and not take it lightly.

The Kearsney match against St Stithians promises to be a tight contest. Kearsney last week beat St Charles by two goals to one and St Charles earlier drew with St Stithians. The KZN side should be able to win, but they need to cut down on mistakes and make sure when they have the opportunity of scoring.

Michaelhouse travel to Durban North to take on Northwood. The latter have surprised in the last few weeks by beating both Glenwood and Kearsney, two of the sides with some of the better results in the Durban area. This is another game that will likely be won by the side that makes the most of their opportunities.

Glenwood and DHS have played once this year, when the spoils were shared. Since then Glenwood have had some very favourable results with their hockey improving and DHS have disappointed. This makes Glenwood, in their centenary year, favourites this morning.

Westville lost by three goals against KES in the KES Festival at Easter. The KZN boys will do well to do any better, as KES is one of the better Gauteng schools this year on their results.

Hilton will also have a tough game in Pretoria against St Albans. Although the latter lost to both Kearsney and Michaelhouse early in the season, they will be playing at home and Hilton will have to be at their best to win in Pretoria.

Fixtures (home side first): Maritzburg College v Affies; Kearsney v St Stithians; Northwood v Michaelhouse; Glenwood v DHS; KES v Westville; St Albans v Hilton.
