In Paris with John

2010-02-26 00:00

THE romantic comedy It’s Complicated is one of three new films opening at CineCentre today.

Meryl Streep plays Jane Adler, the mother of three grown kids and owner of a thriving Santa Barbara bakery and restaurant, who has an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Alec Baldwin).

When Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, an innocent meal leads to several bottles of wine, a laugh-filled evening of memories about their 19-year marriage … and then to an impulsive affair.

With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now the other woman.

Caught in the middle of this renewed romance is Adam (Steve Martin), an architect hired to remodel Jane’s kitchen. Also divorced, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realises he’s become part of an unusual love triangle.

The second new film opening today is the futuristic thriller The Book of Eli, which is set in a post-apocalyptic world which has become lawless. The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun.

Denzel Washington plays Eli, a man fighting to protect a sacred book that could hold the key to the survival of the human race. It’s a book that a man called Carnegie (Gary Oldman) will do anything to find.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Travolta star in the third new film opening in Pietermaritzburg, From Paris With Love. It tells the story of James Reece (Rhys Meyers), a personal aide to the United States ambassador in France, whose real passion is his side job as a low-level operative for the CIA.

All he wants is to become a bona fide agent and see some real action, so when he’s offered his first senior-level assignment, he can’t believe his luck — until he meets his new partner, special agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta), a trigger-happy, wisecracking, loose cannon who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.
