In search of the elusive white stuff

2014-07-08 00:00

WHILE reports of snow in the Midlands were flowing thick and fast on Facebook and BBM messages yesterday, the white stuff proved elusive and not as easy to find as many had hoped.

The current cold front will see frighteningly cold temperatures being experienced like the -6° Celsius predicted for Mooi River tomorrow, according to Weather SA forecaster Aslam Sardiwalla. Light snow fell in areas like Fort Nottingham, Impendle, Mooi River and Rosetta, but melted quickly.

According to Snow Report SA, only light flurries of quickly melting snow were experienced. It reported that it appeared that the Drakensberg border of KZN and Lesotho were “in the snow zone” for yesterday evening and early hours of this morning as well.

In their report they also highlighted that certain parts of the KZN Midlands such as Fort Nottingham, Impendle, Mooi River and Rosetta could also experience some snow fall. “We could also very well see snow on Sani pass and into Lesotho regions such as Mokhotlong,” said Snow Report SA.

It reported that some “very light falls have already been reported between Underberg and Bushmans Nek just after 5 pm” yesterday evening.

“We did not issue any warnings because it was a light snow fall mainly on the high lying areas so there would be no disruptions on traffic or roads,” Sardiwalla said, adding the province will begin to warm up from Thursday and into the weekend.

Sardiwalla said there were no chances of snow after today as they have no precipitation expected.
