In their own words: How Juju's relationship with Zuma soured

IN their own words: how the relationship between Julius Malema and Jacob Zuma soured.

In good times

Malema: “We are prepared to die for Zuma. We are prepared to take up arms and kill for Zuma.”

Malema: “The future belongs to us. We do not want a situation where the state prosecutes its own president.”

Malema: “Whether they like it or not, we’re not going to leave Jacob Zuma here in court but we are going to carry him all the way to the Union Buildings.”

Zuma: He is “a leader in the making and someone who would be worthy of inheriting the ANC.”

In bad times

Malema: “President Zuma is the president of the ANC … I can’t have feelings for him … My relationship with Zuma remains a political one.”

Malema: “Resistance is a part of me. Defiance is a part of me. This is how I was brought up. If I am not convinced, I am not convinced.”

Malema: “It is under President Zuma that we have seen a critical voice of the voiceless being suppressed, we have seen Zuma democracy being replaced with dictatorship. We have seen intolerance, people becoming impatient with the youth.”

Zuma: “I don’t think he [Malema] was in a position to understand how the ANC was acting, I think his understanding was that the organisation is weak, you can do whatever you want to do.”— Witness Reporter.
