Indigent status: Apply before April 15

2013-04-04 00:00

THE proposed changes to Msunduzi’s indigent policy have been described as a “light at the end of a tunnel”.

Fred Wagner, of the Eastwood Community Forum, said the members would monitor the process and will hold the municipality accountable for implementing the policy adequately.

A full council meeting last week agreed to a number of concessions for residents who qualify for indigent status, such as raising the ceiling for household income to R3 200.

It was also proposed that fixed charges be waived so that people on the indigent list pay only for what they use.

Councillor Manilall Inderjith said yesterday that a point left out in the report on the policy changes was that the new concessions will be backdated to January.

To qualify, applicants will have to fill in forms to be entered on the indigent database. Since the criteria were finalised only at last week’s council meeting, the municipality has extended the deadline for forms to submitted to April 15.

The Democratic Alliance said in a statement yesterday that its councillors would be available at the Bombay Civic Centre from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday to help residents complete their applications for indigent status.
