Indoor hockey action comes to the capital from today

2010-11-26 00:00

THE star-studded KZN Inland Indoor Hockey Tournament takes place in Pietermaritzburg from today and promises to bring action and goals galore for supporters.

There are 17 teams gathered, 11 women’s sides and six men’s line-ups from Somerset West in the Western Cape, Johannesburg, Durban and PMB.

Myriad national and provincial players in both formats of the sport will be crossing indoor hockey blades on the Girls’ High, St John’s and Carter courts.

The six-team men’s tournament will be played on a league basis to determine the champions while the women’s event sees two pools of six with the pool winners facing off in Sunday’s 1 pm final at GHS.

Boasting top-class indoor hockey exponents, the strong PMB Varsity line-up must be the men’s tournament favourites.

The women’s event looks wide open with the favourites on paper probably being the powerful Somerset West line-up that boasts quality in the likes of Pippa Rabey and Jade Mayne, and the SG Conglomerates from Johannesburg who have the superb Bevis sisters, Sarah Harley and Jules Cass.

Jeppe, Riverside, CD’s, PMB Varsity A and Standard are in women’s Pool A with Somerset West, SG Conglomerates, Johannesburg Saints, Durban Varsity, PMB Collegians and PMB Varsity B in Pool B.

The men’s event includes Johannesburg’s Jeppe I, Jeppe II and SG/UL Alumni, PMB Varsity and Collegians, plus Durban Varsity.

The action takes place at St John’s and GHS from 5 pm to 9 pm today, from 8 am to 8 pm tomorrow, and 8 am to 2 pm Sunday. Carter will be used for two matches tomorrow from 9 am.
