Induna killed in Folweni

2011-10-10 00:00

TWO men were arrested an hour after they allegedly killed an induna in Folweni yesterday.

The arrested suspects, aged 28 and 33 years old, will appear in the Nsimbini Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The two men had killed local induna Walter Makhanya (70).

He was at his home in the Folweni area when the two armed men entered the premises. It is alleged that they shot the Induna several times before fleeing the scene on foot. He died at the scene.

Local police, together with other specialised units and members of the induna’s family responded and pursued the two men who were arrested in the kwaMakhutha area. A Norinco 9 mm pistol, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered.

The motive for the murder is unkown and detectives have registered a murder docket for further investigation.

The firearm will be sent in for ballistic tests to be conducted. The suspects will remain in custody pending their court appearance.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised police and community members for their swift response.

Ngobeni said, “We always welcome efforts by the community to work hand in hand with the police, and criminals need to be aware that decisive action will be taken against those who transgress the law.” — Witness Reporter.
