Infants saved from drowning in 2 separate incidents

TWO small children were rescued from swimming pools in Durban yesterday.

In the first incident, a toddler was fighting for his life, after a near drowning in Kloof yesterday morning. “The 17-month-old child was reportedly found floating in a swimming pool by residents … Residents pulled the unresponsive child from the water and called for help,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Paramedics worked for about 40 minutes to stabilise the little boy. He was later put on a ventilator and was taken to hospital.

In another near drowning in Durban, lifeguards saved the life of a three-year-old boy after he had an epileptic fit in a beachfront pool.

Botha said the child was playing in the water when lifeguards noticed him disappearing under the water. They pulled the child out the pool and assisted his breathing. He said paramedics arrived and found the child “in a confused state”.

“After examining the patient, it was found that he had aspirated water during the short time he was submerged. If it were not for the quick action of the lifeguards, the boy would have drowned.”

Paramedics stabilised the boy and he was taken to hospital.
