Injured Du Plessis to miss tour of Europe

2013-10-31 00:00

SHARKS tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis has been forced to withdraw from the Springbok tour of Europe.

New Sharks signing, former Griqua prop Lourens Adriaanse, will replace the 30-year-old Du Plessis in the touring squad to play the November Tests against Wales, Scotland and France.

The 30-year-old Du Plessis was ruled out because of a chronic shoulder injury and a hand fracture.

“Jannie went for an MRI scan on his shoulder, while we also reviewed his recent hand injury with his specialist,” Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said last night.

“He will only be ready for the Test against France and we decided not to risk him on this tour.”

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer said the loss of a player of Du Plessis’s experience was a major blow.

“But we’re lucky to have someone like Lourens to step in. He’s been part of the squad for almost the entire Test season and was unlucky to miss initial selection.”

Another possible replacement for Du Plessis, Province’s Pat Cilliers, was also ruled out as he is going for surgery on his shoulder today.

Frans Malherbe, the highly-rated 22-year-old WP tighthead, is in the tour but Meyer may opt to start with the more experienced Coenie Oosthuizen against Wales, although the Free Stater is happier on the loosehead.
