Injury: Goosen’s rugby season could be over

2012-10-09 00:00

SPRINGBOK and Free State flyhalf Johan Goosen’s season is almost certainly over after he damaged knee ligaments during the Springboks’ 32-16 Rugby Championship loss to the All Balcks in Soweto this weekend.

The 20-year-old Cheetahs flyhalf only recently returned from a shoulder injury and also entered the game against New Zealand with bruised heel.

He was replaced by Elton Jantjies in the first half after suffering a knee injury.

Goosen will see two specialists today for a second opinion and a decision will then be made whether he needs surgery that will sideline him until February or March next year.

Free State team doctor Ian Morris said: “He’s done his medial collateral ligaments and we picked that up on the MRI scan, but the lucky thing is that none of the other ligaments have been damaged.

“We’ve decided to get a few more specialists to give an opinion before we decide if we need to operate or not.

“Regardless of whatever course of action is decided, I feel he would be very lucky to make the end-of-year tour.”

If it is decided that an operation is not necessary, Goosen will probably be sidelined for six weeks, which will rule him out of the Bok tour to the UK next month.
