Injury spoils Smith’s county run

BLOEMFONTEIN — Injury has cut short Graeme Smith’s second county season at Surrey for the second year running.

An ankle injury ended the former South African cricket captain’s season prematurely last year. He is now returning to South Africa for a knee operation that will again keep him on the injury lists for a long time.

Meanwhile, Hashim Amla is making his way to Surrey, Sport24 learnt yesterday morning.

Surrey later confirmed on its website Amla will replace his injured countryman.

The statement says Smith (33) fractured his right knee and will miss the rest of the county season after an operation in South Africa.

This is a huge setback for the county.

Smith scored his first ton (103) to help Surrey beat Gloucestershire in what was only Surrey’s second win in the competition’s two seasons.

Amla played for Surrey in their first win when he replaced JP Duminy last year. Amla returned to England yesterday and will play this week against Essex in the four-day county championship match.

The match starts on Sunday at Chelmsford.

Amla is will be playing for a month before he has to join the Proteas on tour to Sri Lanka. Amla will miss the match against Worcestershire when he attends Cricket SA’s annual prize giving early next month.
