Inkosi Zondi suspect shot 19 times

2009-07-29 00:00

ONE of the suspects in the assassination of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi has been killed outside his KwaMashu home.

The name of the deceased has not been released since police were not sure yesterday if his family have been notified.

Neither could they confirm whether the killing was to avenge the blood of Zondi, who was gunned down while visiting his fiancé in Umlazi on January 22.

Director Phindile Radebe said the man was shot while out on bail.

“The information we have right now is that people posing as policemen called him to the gate. When he came out, he was shot all over the body. Nineteen empty cartridges were found at the scene from 9 mm[firearms] and R5 rifles,”she said.

This is the second suspect connected to Zondi’s killing to have been shot. Bongani Mkhize (45), chairman of the kwaMaphumulo Taxi Association, was killed in a shoot-out with police.

Mkhize was also linked to the murder of Kranskop policeman Superintendent Zethembe Chonco in 2008.

He had requested a court interdict preventing police from killing him after claiming he was on their hit list.
