Inland Under 19 hold Free State to a draw at PMB Oval

2009-10-19 00:00

THE U19 three-dayer between KZN Inland and Free State ended drawn at Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Free State had declared on Friday on 376 for six, hoping to run over Inland twice in the time left after rain ruined Saturday’s cricket.

Despite the huge amount of time lost to weather, the Free Staters came within six wickets of an innings victory — and it could have gone so much better if they had remembered to apply what they have learned at catching practice and attacked the stumps.

Time and again the Inland batsman — coach Paul Atkins’s men are fighters to the last man — were able to shoulder arms at deliveries that were directed outside the off stump and not at the sticks themselves.

It is obviously a habit that comes with age and experience, but you would think these Free Staters, schooled at the hands of hardened coaches at some of the best Bloemfontein establishments, would have learnt that lesson in their primary education.

That said, there was no denying the heroic efforts of an Inland XI forced to punch much above their weight division due to the unavailability of many of their peers, who they would be the first to acknowledge are better cricketers.

Inland skipper Dustin Chaplin led from the front, bowling a quarter of his side’s overs and facing over a third of the Free State first-innings deliveries on his own in defying the rampant visitors.

Inland’s top schools’ cricketers could not play this weekend due to important matches of their own. Imagine a boy on a cricket scholarship not being available for, let’s say, either Hilton or Maritzburg College on Saturday? And his side lost? What would the financiers of the scholarship have to say? Inland should have foreseen this.
