Inland and Northerns level-pegging

2010-10-02 00:00

CAPTAIN Kyle Nipper’s KZN Inland cricket team lead Northerns by 94 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand as the Provincial Three-Day Challenge goes into its final day at the Maritzburg Oval Saturday.

In reply to Inland’s first inning 300 all out in 83 overs on Thursday, Northerns scored 281 for seven when their stipulated overs were up yesterday. In the home side’s second innings, they reached 75 for two at stumps.

Inland were hampered by the back injury that forced left-arm opening bowler Athi Maposa off the field, and it left Brady Barends to carry the torch for the home side.

And he did so superbly, the super-fit Barends going hard at the Northerns batsmen despite the oppressive heat and he deserved better than his excellent three for 39 from 19 all-out overs.

It was a good all-round effort by Inland as they kept the strong Northerns batting line-up in check, despite a fine Henry Davids 70 off 123 deliveries that included 11 fours and a six. Abram Ndlovu’s undefeated 70 (106b, 10x4, 1x6) was complemented by 39 apiece from Pieter Malan and Chris Schoeman.

The 40-over match is on Sunday.
