Inland and SWD locked in battle

2011-02-26 00:00

KZN Inland are leading South Western Districts by 163 runs with two wickets still in the bank as the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match goes into its final day at the Pietermaritzburg Oval today.

In reply to Inland’s first innings of 285 for four, SWD ended three runs short, and in the home side’s second knock the visitors did well to limit them to 160 for eight at stumps.

Burton de Wett laid the foundation for SWD with a run-a-ball partnership of 178 for the second wicket with opener Sammy-Joe Avontuur. De Wett smashed 117 off just 97 balls and hammered 18 fours and two maximums. Avontuur’s 56 off 84 balls included seven fours. The prolific Neil Bredenkamp’s 70 in 117 deliveries saw him stroke five boundaries and two sixes.

Inland skipper and left-arm spinner Kyle Nipper picked up his second first-class fifer (5-80), while 18-year-old Tyler Lortan took a career-best four for 36.

One of the many remarkable games in cricket’s long history has got to be the one under way at Boland Park in Paarl, where KZN Coastal continue to confound hosts Boland.

After an unheard-of declaration at 29 for six in their first innings, Coastal then bundled Boland out for 160 and built a strong position yesterday compiling 390 in their second dig.

Today Boland (35/0) need another 225 runs to win this amazing match.
