Inland cricketers disappoint against Province

2009-10-05 00:00

KZN Inland were disappointing in going down by six wicket to Western Province in the Provincial Challenge 45-over match at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

There were two decisive moments in the match — and they both revolved around WP new-ball bowler Mario Olivier, who first dismissed Inland opening batsmen Dipak Anand and Mbasa Gqadushe, and then Glen Addicott inside the initial nine overs.

The second decisive play came when Olivier removed Inland captain Tim Drummond (31) and all-rounder Morne van Vuuren (51) in the 37th over after the pair had batted superbly to add 83 and rescue their side from a parlous 61 for five.

Olivier’s five for 37 was a match-winning performance in every respect. He also had very good support from seamers Gershwin Rabie, who got Inland player/coach Doug Watson and Ollie Humphries, and Mondli Mahlombe, who had Bradley Moses caught behind for 33.

Inland left-hander Kyle Nipper again proved that he could easily bat much further up the order than his current eighth spot, with another free-flowing innings, this time a half-hour cameo of 39 not out to realise an unbeaten 59 runs over two innings and off just 45 deliveries in the four days’ cricket at the PMB Oval.

Yes, Nipper was twice batting at the fag end of his team’s innings, but the point is he can play shots with consistency off both front and back foot, has a solid defence, keeps the scorers busy with his ability to pierce the field and also has the big shots in his repertoire. Get him higher up the order and see what he can do.

Other than Van Vuuren, the less said about Inland’s bowling the better.

The three-day match that ended on Saturday was drawn after Thursday’s washout, but there were encouraging Inland performances ahead of KZN Coastal at the Oval in three days’ time.
