Inland eye back-to-back titles at U16 IPT final

2010-06-18 00:00

THE final of the SA U16 Boys’ Interprovincial Hockey Tournament on Pape’s Astro at Maritzburg College at 1.15 pm today sees hosts and defending champions KZN Inland meeting Southern Gauteng.

Inland, the only unbeaten side, beat Border 3-1 yesterday in a semi-final scoreline that doesn’t do justice to the fine performance of the East London boys, while Southerns downed Western Province 2-1 in a tempestuous semi-final that saw eight players sent to the sin-bin, including three after a single play.

Umpires for the final, Cole Milton and Henno Pretorius, will be under huge pressure to deliver today after five days of hockey in which Inland and Southerns have given their all in striving for this moment, where they are on the brink of championship honours.

Inland’s goals against Border went to Jordan Turnbull and a Tim Guise-Brown double, while Border replied through Keanu Brittnill. In the other semi, Southerns scored via the sticks of Daniel Bell and Stuart Philip, with Rushin October netting for WP.

It will certainly be a feather in coach Brandon Swart’s cap if his well-drilled KZN Inland team can deliver him back-to-back titles after their triumph in Potchefstroom last year.

And in Potchefstroom, the Girls’ U16 IPT final will be contested between KZN Coastal and Border today, while KZN Inland will play for ninth place, having beaten North West 4-1.

Meanwhile, it was a good day for KZN at the national U16 and U13 rugby weeks.

KZN U13 beat Zimbabwe 15-0 in Graaff-Reinet with tries by Daniel Rust, Franco Erasmus and Jeandre Bekker, while KZN U16 beat SWD 21-15 in Upington with tries from Abraham Swart, Dian Boshoff and Jonathan Le Roux.
