Inland fancy their chances

2013-12-05 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Inland should fancy their chances when they take on Easterns in a CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition game at the Pietermaritzburg Oval today.

Coach Grant Morgan is happy with the squad he has at his disposal, especially with three players returning from franchise duty with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins don’t return to Sunfoil Series action until next week.

The players — Imraan Khan, Divan van Wyk and Craig Alexander — return to give Morgan’s boys a timely boost after having been outplayed by Gauteng last weekend, losing by six wickets.

However, after trouncing Gauteng in the shorter format on Sunday by 88 runs after an impressive batting and bowling performance, Morgan hopes they can carry on.

“We’re hoping that the good win in the One-Day game against Gauteng will kick us on. We’re looking to improve, and we’re looking for the win,” Morgan told The Witness yesterday afternoon.

Morgan has selected a squad of 12, and will make a decision at the 11th hour on who takes the field.

“The wicket at the Oval has been unpredictable. There have been times when it has suited the spinners, and there have been other times when the seamers excelled. It’s been tough to read. We’ll also have to take other things into consideration such as cloud cover.

“We tried to pick a side that would cover all challenges,” he said, adding that there was also a couple of injuries in the side.

“We want to make that call about the final XI tomorrow [today] at the 11th hour,” Morgan said.

Having suffered just their first defeat in the competition last week, Inland will want to turn their run around having last tasted victory in early October when they beat Namibia by seven wickets.

They face an Easterns side that recorded a dominant win over the South Western Districts in Oudtshoorn over the weekend.

The danger man for Easterns in their win over SWD was middle order batsman Grant Thomson, who the home team couldn’t dismiss in two innings as he made 89* and 19* as they won by six wickets.

In the shorter version, Easterns sit second from bottom, and lost a tight encounter against SWD by one wicket with three balls remaining.

Today’s game at the Oval starts at 9 am.
