Inland off to a disastrous start

2008-10-06 00:00

Province beat KZN Inland by 46 runs in the SA Airways Challenge 45-over match in Bellville yesterday, earning five points to none against in the process.

In reply to WP’s 195 for six, Inland could only muster 149 all out with 22 balls left on the table.

After a disastrous start that saw Inland on 47 for six at one stage, there was still hope with Morné van Vuuren and Garry Hampson at the crease on 57 and 31 respectively, the total at 148 for seven and 48 required off the last five overs.

Anyone who knows this experienced pair will acknowledge that ,with both, achieving 10 an over is not too much of a problem.

However, it was not to be. And two batsmen cannot be expected to carry the can when the top six can only scrape together a dismal 39 between them.

Essentially the match was won and lost up front, with WP reaching 100 for three in the 26th over while Inland struggled to 100 in the 34th over with seven wickets down.

WP opening bowler Gurshwin Rabie had a superb limited-over debut at this level, removing three of the top four batsmen for very little, rattling the wickets of two and having the other caught behind in classic quick-bowler fashion.

Rabie was not even in WP coach Eric Simons’ initial three- or one-day sides released to The Witness and came in at the last moment.

WP won by 46 runs. Points: WP 5, KZN Inland 0.

Meanwhile, the three-day match that ended on Saturday became a tussle for first-innings bonus points after day one was washed out.

Inland won this one in the drawn affair by 0,74 points after earning 7.68 to WP’s 6.94 in what could ultimately have been a close match had Wednesday’s overnight rain not ruined Thursday’s possibilities.

Having been asked to bat, the WP first innings realised 197 all out with nine deliveries of their allotted 85 overs still on the table.

In reply, Inland did well to compile 244 for nine, the only worthwhile partnership 55 for the seventh wicket between player/coach Doug Watson and Mbasa Gqadushe.

Watson, batting in the number five spot and on Inland debut, was the mainstay, coming in at 67 for three and being last man out for 84 (151b, 7x4, 1x6). In their second knock, WP dawdled to 73 for one in 36 overs before stumps were drawn.
