Inland to meet Border in exciting semi-final

2010-06-17 00:00

THE semi-finals of the SA U16 Interprovincial Hockey Tournament today will see hosts KZN Inland meeting the exciting Border line-up at 12.50 pm at Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro, while Western Province face Southern Gauteng at 2 pm.

This emerged yesterday after day three of the preliminary pool stage.

And today’s last-four clashes will determine who will meet in the final of the tournament for the right to be named 2010 champions, this after coach Brandon Swart’s KZN Inland side won the title in Potchefstroom last year.

Tomorrow’s final is set down for 1.15 pm on Pape’s Astro — and it is sure to be a cracker given the excitement generated by the four sides during this IPT.

WP and Southerns play a disciplined brand of hockey that stands them in good stead; Inland are probably the most classical hockey side here, while the Border squad are chock-full of talented, exciting runners who play with an uncommon flair and passion.

Certainly, today’s first semi-final between Border and Inland is sure to quicken the pulses — if the East London boys bring their A game to the turf.

In a thriller yesterday, Inland beat Southern Gauteng 3-2 with goals from captain Tim Guise-Brown — the most potent drag-flicker at IPT — Jordan Turnbull and Sean Donaldson, while Daniel Bell and Stuart Philip found the net for Southerns.

In the Girls’ U16 IPT in Potchefstroom, KZN Coastal face Eastern Province in today’s first semi-final, with Southerns tackling Border in the second.

KZN Inland face North West in a bid to play for ninth place tomorrow.

Inland lost 3-1 to Coastal yesterday and were shaded 4-3 by Mpumalanga.

• After yesterday’s rugby rest day, KZN meet Zimbabwe today at the U13 Craven Week in Graaff Reinet, while KZN tackle SWD at the U16 Grant Khomo Week in Upington.
