Inland’s Hendrie hits maiden ton

2011-03-25 00:00

A MAIDEN first-class century by 19-year-old Nick Hendrie at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom yesterday put KZN Inland in a favourable position after day one of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match against North West Dragons.

After winning the toss, Inland’s first innings realised 283 for four at the 85-over declaration mark and in reply North West were not sitting pretty at 24 for two when time was called.

Trailing by 259 runs with eight wickets left in the first innings, North West will have a potentially match-deciding first session to deal with today as Inland go for the jugular,

Hendrie’s ton came up in just his fifth first-class match and the Maritzburg College Old Boy’s elevation to this level straight from school, albeit with a season or two of Premier League club cricket for Zingari already behind him, has been a major success.

The teenager’s 124 in just under five hours came off 230 deliveries and included 12 fours and three sixes. He enjoyed a 195-run partnership for the second wicket with Bradley Moses.

Just 10 days shy of his 28th birthday, Moses fell six runs short of what would have been his third hundred in first-class cricket. The St Charles product’s 94 in just over four hours was scored off 200 balls and contained 10 boundaries.

North West skipper Werner Coetzee and Malusi Siboto picked up two wickets apiece.

North West’s initial thrust with the bat has been calamitous to say the least. In next to no time, Inland fast bowler Kimeshan Chetty trapped opener Yusuf Bulbulia and former Maritzburg College first XI batsman Kyllin Vardhan in front playing across the line.

Meanwhile in Bloemfontein, KZN Coastal captain Khaya Zondo elected to bat and Nashen Govender’s three-hour 82 (129 balls, 11 fours) was complemented by his team-mates chipping in with useful contributions — none better than Chad Bowes’s 42 on first-class debut — as the Durban lads compiled 271 for nine in their first innings. Free State were 64 without loss at stumps.
