Insatiable for child porn

2012-07-27 00:00

WELKOM — An ex-policeman who possessed and distributed shocking child pornography has been found guilty on seven charges in the sexual offences court.

André Stephen Botha (38), originally from Durban, pleaded guilty on all charges in front of magistrate Tiloshni Ramdey.

The trial is taking place in Welkom to enable Charmaine Labuschagne, a state prosecutor known for her success with these cases, to represent the state.

Labuschagne described Botha as someone with an insatiable appetite to be involved in, acquire, describe or look at all types of child pornography. After his arrest, hundreds of explicit photos, videos and discussions were found on his cellphone, Mxit, BBM and on Skype chat rooms.

His bank statements show that in one month he spent up to R8 000 to download pornographic images of children. He reportedly offered a pre-primary school teacher R1 000 for nude photos of the toddlers in her care.

The shocking material includes descriptions of bondage sex with children, explicit photos, bestiality and incest with pre-schoolers.

Botha had created a fictitious profile of a young girl, which he set up to portray his daughter, in one of the chat rooms. Under this profile he discussed explicit sex between the girl, her father and three-year-old brother.

The incidents he described took place in Bloemfontein, Welkom, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bronkhorstspruit and Durban, among other places.

Part of the investigation against Botha saw U.S., intelligence officers investigate an extensive child porn network. Evidence in court shows that he continued downloading child porn after his arrest and detention, using his cellphone and Mxit.

While he was in prison in Odendaalsrus, he reportedly contacted a woman friend in Bronkhorstspruit and asked her to to destroy all the photos and videos as well as his computer’s hard drive and memory card. Someone reported her and the police seized the evidence.

Botha is guilty of possessing, making and supplying child porn, attempts to commit sexual deeds with minors and obstructing the course of justice.

Evidence in aggravation will be presented when he is sentenced on September 3.
