Inspired to keep dreaming

“I LEARNT never to give up hope after watching this movie.”

These were the words of Nkandla pupil Sizwe Mthembu, one of the children given the chance to watch the premiere of award-winning feature film, Izulu Lami (My Secret Sky), which opened at Ster Kinekor cinemas around the country yesterday.

Sizwe and his friends shared the special screening with First Lady Nompumelelo MaNtuli Zuma at the Ster Kinekor cinema at Gateway shopping mall in Umhlanga.

The children, many of whom had never been to a cinema before, and their teachers were treated to popcorn and soft drinks before settling down to watch the movie, which tells the tale of two rural siblings and their adventures in the big city.

Zuma met the writers and producers of the movie, Madoda Ncayiyana and Julie Frederikse, before the screening and expressed her gratitude to them for giving the children an opportunity to view it.

“She is very keen on supporting children and went to great lengths to bring them to watch it. We appreciate this gesture,” said Ncayiyana.

“She promised she would give us a verdict once the movie was over. It’s great knowing she took the time to be here with the children,” he said.

Frederikse said it is important that rural children watch the movie as it will encourage them to try to realise their dreams.

“We used child actors who had never acted before; we hope that the kids learn that they too can achieve anything they set their minds to,” she said.

Ncayiyana said he is eager to see what the public thinks about the movie.

“The movie has had a great response from the Durban International Film Festival, but I’m waiting to see what the local people think,” he said.
