Insults over Gaza turn to laughs

2014-07-24 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Between the ANC and EFF, the blood bath in Gaza yesterday turned into a laughing matter in Parliament.

It all started when ANC chief whip Stone Sizani in his speech symphatised with Palestinians and said it was now South Africa’s turn to help the people who had supported the ANC in its struggle against apartheid. He said the people on the opposition benches on his left “felt nothing” for Palestine because they had received money from “the people who built the wall between Israel and Gaza”.

DA chief whip John Steenhuisen on a point of order said it was against Parliament’s rules to use “insulting language” in the House.

Deputy speaker Lechesa Tsenoli, who chaired the sitting, said he would check the Hansard before ruling on Steenhuisen’s point of order.

EFF leader Julius Malema then also jumped up. He was dressed in a red overall and white scarf, which according to EFF members showed his support for Palestine. “Chair, I sit on the ANC chief whip’s left. So he is also insulting the EFF. On this point I agree with him [Steenhuisen].”

MPs then had a good laugh at the unlikely coalition between the EFF and DA.
