Insurance scam: doctor banned

2011-03-19 00:00

THE doctor involved in an alleged R4,5 million insurance scam with Czech “mafia boss” Radovan Krejcir has been banned from the hospital with which he was associated.

Dr Marian Tupy, a urologist, was sentenced in the Wynberg Regional Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday to seven years’ imprisonment, conditionally suspended for five years, after revealing his role in assisting Krejcir with a false diagnosis that he was dying of cancer. Krejcir made R4,5 million from Liberty Life as part of the alleged scam and Discovery Healthcare also incurred losses of some R250 000.

Krejcir, according to Tupy, hoped the diagnosis would also prevent his deportation to the Czech Republic where he has been found guilty of several crimes in his absence.

Tupy was granted a plea deal in return for his evidence against Krejcír whom he said had intimidated him and threatened him with harm.

In a statement, Life Flora Clinic in Roodepoort said that it had suspended Tupy’s access privileges pending a review of his conduct in terms of the the Life Group’s code of conduct for doctors.

Flora Clinic said its investigation into Tupy’s actions would “soon be completed”.

The hospital management distanced itself from Tupy’s actions.

In a statement Tupy acknowledges that he violated the law but said: “I had no choice if I still wanted to be alive.”
