International boxing returns to Durban

2014-03-13 00:00

INTERNATIONAL boxing returns to Durban this weekend when Ludonga Boxing Promotions stages the vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Flyweight title bout between local fighter Moruti “Babyface” Mthalane and Jether “The General” Oliva from the Phillipines.

The fight is set for the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre on Saturday night. The main bout will be preceded by amateur fights from midday.

The last time an international bout was staged in the city was in 1998. Simon Ramoni won the IBO junior featherweight belt with a second-round stoppage of American Michael Alldis at the Village Green Hall in December 1998.

The Saturday bout is being staged by 2010 promoter of the year Durban-based Thulani Magudulela and the provincial Department for Sports and Recreation. For Mthalane, the fight offers him a lifeline after he endured a miserable two years of inactivity. This led to him dumping the highly-rated International Boxing Federation (IBF) Flyweight strap which he had only defended four times.

Mthalane will fight for the first time at home since 2003, when he knocked out Mpumezi Mazantsi in the first round at the Institute of Technology Hall in Durban on August 15. Mthalane, a former undefeated national and WBC International flyweight champion, should bank on home advantage against Oliva, who comes into the fight with a record of 20 wins against a single defeat. Mthalane, who is trained by flamboyant Nick Durandt in Gauteng, boasts a record of 29 wins and two defeats.

Tickets range from R25 to R200 and are available at Computicket outlets.
