Intimidation alleged on eve of protest

A SERVICE delivery protest march to the Mpofana Municipal offices on Saturday failed to attract large numbers from the Mooi River community.

Scheduled to start at 8 am, the protest eventually took off after 11 am when only 100 of an expected 600 people showed up.

The convener of the Phumlasi Development Committee, Henry Khumalo, said that despite the low turnout, the march went quite well.

He said the shooting of a community member in the early hours of Saturday morning could have been a deterrent for would-be participants.

People were harassed and warned not to attend the march, he added.

Captain Thulani Zwane said Malele Zaca was approached by three men while walking along Bruntville Main Road at 1 am on Saturday. After shooting Zaca, the men ran off without taking anything from him.

“Zaca was then taken to a local clinic before being transferred to Grey’s Hospital, where he died.

“A murder case has been opened but there’s no motive or arrest at this stage,” said Zwane.
