Is Mkhize’s visit for KZN or ANC?

2013-08-23 00:00

WILL Premier Zweli Mkhize visit Malaysia in his official capacity as premier, or will he be raising funds for the cash-strapped ANC ahead of next year’s election?

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said last night the purpose of Mkhize’s travel to any country would never be revealed.

Mthembu said that for now the ANC welcomed Mkhize’s bold decision to assume his full-time post as treasurer-general in the party’s Johannesburg headquarters.

“One thing must be understood that when he travels, it’s part of his job to get money for the party. He can look for money anywhere and that is in his job description as treasurer,” said Mthembu.

When Mkhize raises funds during his travels, these would be used for the ANC’s running of its office and for the elections.

“By the way, there has never been a political party that publicises why they travel and for what. In the future, the ANC will not release a statement to say where and why Mkhize was travelling,” he said.

However, last night Mkhize’s spokesperson Ndabe Sibiya said that President Jacob Zuma had invited the premier and that it was an official visit. “He is part of the delegation that is accompanying the president. It’s a diplomacy visit. He is going there as the premier.”
