Islamic hospital planned in Durban

DOCTORS involved in the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) at the Port Shepstone branch are working hard to raise funds for a new project — the Islamic Hospital.

A fundraiser dinner was held at Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Friday at which businessmen pledged support in the form of cash donations.

Said Dr Raeesa Mahomed, vice chairperson of IMA in Port Shepstone, “We received an overwhelming response to the dinner and raised R50 000 from ticket sales alone.”

She said the chairperson of the association, Dr Tahir Khan, and members had dedicated a lot of their time to making the fundraiser a success.

“We have not established the exact figure of how much money was raised but it is in the region of R100 000 to R500 000,” said Mahomed.

A member, Dr Zjunaid Khan, said IMA South Africa has branches in most cities and towns. The branches are responsible for fundraising.

“Each IMA branch is also responsible for creating awareness about the services the association offers,” Khan said.

“The main objective of the hospital is to offer the best quality health care to destitute communities within the Muslim and non-Muslim sector.”

Khan said the hospital will be called the Islamic Hospital because it will be run in accordance with an Islamic ethos.

“A minor fee will be charged for treatment. These funds will be utilised for the daily running of the hospital.”

The Islamic Hospital will be the first of its kind in Southern Africa and will be located in Durban.

Khan thanked everyone who had pledged their support.
