‘Italians’ open gap at top of standings

2014-06-19 00:00

THIS past weekend saw Juventus open up an eight-point advantage in the Durban Central Football Association with a 4-0 drubbing of Hearts.

While the “Italians” were doing the business, their nearest rivals Coronation lost to Riverside while Albert Park lost ground with a draw at bottom-placed Stars.

Juventus continued their unbeaten run with maximum points against a Hearts side that displayed anything but heart. There was never any doubt with the result, Juventus netting through Nicola Acampora, Khanya Ntombela, Jean-Marie Ntsengiyumva and Calvin Luthuli.

The Durban North team is enjoying a season of impressive consistency, outlined by casting an eye on their top goalscorers to date. Top scorer is Shane Magee, who has only netted six times, with the rest of the goals shared among six other players.

Newlands enjoyed the biggest win of the weekend, taking care of Westville Old Boys 8-0 to move into second spot in the standings, while Friends, whose three consecutive wins have seen them move steadily up the table, added New Orleans to their list of conquests — winning the Greenwood Park derby 2-1, thanks to a brace from top marksman Ranado Buckley.

Sando returned to winning ways after their loss to Albert Park, making a statement in a convincing 4-1 victory against an out-of-sorts Villa Park. Goals came from a double strike from Rabbi Amoah and Bongani Memela, with Villa Park replying through Gilmore Tissong.

Hoping to close the gap on Juventus and having drawn their previous two matches, Coronation’s ambitions were shattered by Riverside who looked impressive in a 3-1 win.

Riverside captain Jared Chelin lead by example with two goals, while the third was an impressive volley from Mikko van Breemen.

Albert Park lost the opportunity to take full points in a 1-1 draw with Stars who welcomed the opportunity to take a point from the game.

The current log sees Juventus well out in front with 30 points from 12 matches, chased by Newlands, Friends and Albert Park all on 22 points. Coronation have 21 and Riverside 19. Stars are bottom with four from 11 matches, a little behind Villa Park (8pts) and Westville (9pts).

This weekend is the first round of the knockout cup, with matches being played on Saturday from 1.30 pm at Danville, Tills, Siripath and Jimmy Bellows.
