It’s fishing heaven

2013-10-19 00:00

I HAVE just returned from a trip to bassing heaven with my buddy Andrew Read and the fact that we have hardly targeted bass this year was made up for in one single day.

Woodstock Dam just outside Bergville was the venue.

The dam was way lower than I have ever seen it, which made getting the boat in the water a challenge and a nightmare getting it out. This had us doubting the productivity of our trip and after the first spot was a bust, we really started getting restless.

In the second week of October, with a waxing moon and the optimum water temperature, these fish should have been in total spawn mode and on the banks ready to do battle, but they were testing us.

This was until we hit the second spot. In an hour, we caught no fewer than 40 fish in a single area. And I am not just talking about any fish, I am talking about fish that averaged out at between 2,5 kg and 3,5 kg, with the heaviest topping 3,7 kg. It was completely insane and trust me in my time I have seen some amazing days, but this one has to be up there with the best of them.

At the end of the day, we had maintained this average and ended up with over 80 fish, severe sunburn, bleeding hands and a truck and trailer stuck in the mud. Now that was worth it. Where was I? I told you, in bass heaven.

The good news is that it seems all KwaZulu-Natal bassing venues have exploded with obliging bass. I have had awesome reports coming in from Inanda, Albert Falls, Goedetrouw and like I predicted last time, Midmar has finally let go of its stubborn self and allowed the fish to do as they please.

The common denominator with all these venues is that the fish are on the banks and holding to preferable vegetation or basically any available cover. This is obviously in-line with the spawning season and the quantities of fish just seem to be amazing at the moment.

Albert’s definitely fits into the aforementioned pattern, but is also holding plenty fish on the flats adjacent to main lake areas such as the ridge and the islands of trees. This is a pretty common pattern for this time of the year and it is now your time to get busy with your Carolina-Rig, which is just the most efficient way of covering these areas. Also, do not be shy of the wind. As long as it is not at the point of being unfishable, the breeze normally ignites the fish on the flats — mainly in the afternoon.

Inanda is also holding some larger fish in deeper water. These could be pre-spawners waiting to go up or even post-spawners that have already done the deed as they tend to use similar areas. At Inanda, these types of areas are less general and more particular, and tend to be isolated at depths that will ensure that your electronics are put to the test.

My advice is while the fish are in the mood, get your points up with the wife and kids to allow you to get your boat out of the garage and on the water, because I cannot guarantee that the fishing will be this mad for much longer.

So get out on the lake and catch some bass, and remember to release your catch alive to prolong the sustainability of our resource. E-mail me with reports, pictures and questions at
