BORN at Murchison Hospital, Welcome Chirwa has been living on the South Coast his entire life (29 years). He works at Locksmith and Car Security in Port Shepstone as a key cutter and considers himself a whizz in the kitchen. The Witness spoke to him.

You must enjoy the South Coast to have been here for so long. What is it that you enjoy?

CHIRWA: The weather is right and the people are cool.

What do you do when you have time to yourself?

CHIRWA: Go to the Shelly Centre with my girlfriend to watch a movie.

Any pressure on you to pop the question yet?

CHIRWA: One day; maybe in a couple of years.

Will you be voting in the local elections?

CHIRWA: Definitely, it is very important to vote.

What is the biggest problem facing South Africa?

CHIRWA: Poverty. There are so many people without jobs.

Chiefs or Pirates?

CHIRWA: Pirates.

Where would you like to visit most and why?

CHIRWA: Los Angeles. Tu Pac had a song about it and I’ve always wanted to go since then.

How is your cooking?

CHIRWA: I’m a great cook because I live by myself. My speciality is meat and pap.

If you won the lotto what would you do first?

CHIRWA: Get married and buy a new house; a big one.

What do you enjoy about your job?

CHIRWA: I like talking to the customers; I like talking.
