Jail terms cut: ‘Only five have re-offended’

2012-07-12 00:00

ONLY five of the thousands of offenders released on remission in the province have re-offended.

Correctional Services regional commissioner Mnikelo Nxele announced this yesterday on the last day of the 10-week process that saw a total of 7 482 prisoners in KZN released.

President Jacob Zuma announced the remissions in April. A total of 43 789 inmates were expected to be released by the end of the process.

Nxele said Correctional Services had tried to ensure that all offenders who benefited from the remission underwent pre-release programmes to prepare them for reintegration to society.

“The department has also gone the extra mile in negotiating with private companies to assist offenders with additional skills to enable them to start their own businesses.

“We are proud to announce that some of the offenders who have been released on remission of sentence are already employed …

“The skills they have acquired in prison include panel beating and electronics, and these have assisted some to start their businesses and others to be employable.”
