Jason Hartman, best of the ‘rock stars’ but outdone by starlets

2009-04-05 00:00

Howick High Idols hopeful Jason Hartman may not have been the best of the bunch on last night’s show — but all of the judges agreed, he was certainly the best of the boys.

Last night’s show saw the remaining contestants transforming from pop stars into rock stars — tattoos and all.

The 29-year-old from Howick ended the first round of tunes with Lightning Crashes by alternative rock group Live — a performance for which Mara Louw gave Jason a standing ovation, saying it was clear that Jason wants to win this competition and she is happy for him to win.

5fm presenter Gareth Cliff said Jason was “the only guy who stepped up as a rock star” last night.

Dave Thompson said his only competition will come from the two remaining girls.

Randall Abrahams, not known for his abundance of flattering comments, was the only judge who wasn’t impressed with his performance, saying it was “certainly not rock ’n roll”.

For his second song, Jason performed Hanging by a Moment by Lifehouse — a song that, according to Thompson, secured his title of the best of the boys last night.

Thompson was quick to add, however, that “the two girls outperformed” him.

Louw said Jason is already so good that he “should be out there making lots of millions”.

Cliff noted that Jason’s range “isn’t bad at all”.

“There’s a dynamism in your voice that’s very attractive,” he said.

Abrahams, however, stood firm on his previous comments, adding that rock “isn’t the girls’ natural genre, but they shone …”

In related news, the 29-year-old visited home this weekend to film a segment for one of the upcoming Idols shows.

While in town, he performed at Crossways in Hilton alongside his father and brother.

Meanwhile, M-Net confirmed that 25-year-old Pixie Bennett was voted out last week by the smallest losing margin in Idols history — she lost her spot in the top six by only 30 votes. This is proof as to how important voting is to keep your favourite in the show.

To vote for Jason, call 086 227 7710 or SMS Jason to 34680.
