Jason: KZN Idols chart-topper releases first album

2009-10-21 00:00

WITH his first two singles topping the charts countrywide, Idols winner Jason Hartman released his much-anticipated debut album yesterday.

“We worked really hard to get it out by the summer,” said the former Howick High schoolboy. “It’s been difficult, but I’m really proud that we’ve been able to reach our goal.”

Since winning Idols in April, Hartman has been balancing his time between a nationwide tour, recording in the studio and promoting the album, On the Run.

“I was sick with flu for three months and I still had to sing on stage and record. It was hectic, but we did it.”

He said that besides the first single, Breaking the Silence, and two other tracks on the 13-track release, all the other songs are his own work. “I wrote everything else,” he said. “I sang all the vocals, played the bass and guitar … My brother Scott played the drums.”

Hartman, who was the first person from KwaZulu-Natal to win Idols, managed to put his album out in the record-breaking time of just six months.

He described the album’s style as “funky rock”, and said it has something for everyone.
