Jay Jenkins wins KZN flat-water K1 title

Farmers Brewery Hattingspruit KZN K1 Flat-Water Champs.

A small entry of just 38 paddlers made the trek to Hattingspruit on Saturday for the KZN K1 Flat-Water Marathon Champs and the best of them were not KZN paddlers.

Gauteng U16 junior, Brandon van der Walt, won the race overall.

The first KZN paddler, and thus the KZN Flat-Water Marathon Champion for 2008, was sub-veteran Jay Jenkins. There were no KZN boy’s finishers after Stuart MacLaren was forced to withdraw with stomach cramps.

In the women’s race, Gauteng took the top spot again with Olympic paddler Bridgitte Hartley.

Second, and both KZN junior and senior champion for 2008, was Natal Canoe Club’s rising U14 star, Emma Horner. Junior Jenna Ward took third place. James Horner was the only guppy entrant.

Sierra Ranch Mooi River Race.

In contrast to the Hattingspruit race, 120 paddlers took part in the 28-km Sierra Ranch Mooi River race yesterday. Despite the fact that the Mooi is one of the few rivers in KZN with natural flow at the moment, paddlers had to toil with a lowish seven cumecs.

Mark Mulder and Shaun Griffin were the first two boats into White Rapid after the Le Man’s start, and stayed that way all the way to the finish at Sierra Ranch. Andrew Birkett had his second third place of the weekend.

Junior, Robyn Kime, won the women’s race with Hillary Pitchford ahead of Abie Adie for the first time in several races to take second place.

Robyn’s brother Lance Kime won the boys race in fifth place.

New year races

These were the last two races in KZN for 2008, but the season continues early in 2009 with the Bushman’s Double Header on January 3. The two-in-one race starts at Wagondrift Dam at 9 am, with the “B” class race from the Dam down to Lambert Park.

Then there is a break until 2 pm, when paddlers can continue on the “A” class Lambert Park to Weenan Road race.

BR and CR rated paddlers will get proficiency credits even if they don’t do the later event.

Kingfisher Canoe Club’s Inanda Dam to Durban Race on January 4 is the final qualifier and seeding race for the Hansa Powerade Dusi 2009.

This “B” class race starts at 7 am from the Msinsi Resort on Inanda Dam and covers the day three Dusi course.
