Jazz: Rainbow concerts back

2009-08-21 00:00

THE management of the Rainbow Restaurant and Jazz Club in Pinetown has announced that it will stage music concerts every month until 2010.

The announcement is bound to be good news for the venue’s regular patrons who have endured a long musical drought at the venue.

Making the announcement during the show of the Bheki Khoza Quartet recently, co-owner Neil Comfort said the hiatus was due to the effects of the recession and he ensured that there are now activities lined up for months to come.

“There will be music every month until 2010 and during the 2010 Soccer World Cup there will be music every day,” said Comfort.

Among the recent performers at the venue was left-handed guitarist Bheki Khoza, who was accompanied by Philani Ngidi on bass, Melvern Peters on piano and Paki Peloeole on drums.

Now based in Johannesburg, Khoza originally hails from Umlazi and last performed at the venue 22 years ago.

He thrilled audiences with tunes such as The Sacred Ones, Lakushon’langa, Onezindlebe Makezwe, Halleluiah and several others.

Musicians in the audience, saxophonists Salim from the U.S. and Sthembiso Ntuli, drummer Clarence Khumalo and guitarist Mtsaki Msweli, later joined the quartet for a jam session and belted out several well-known tunes for the audience.
