Jennings, Moolman win Midmar Notts

2009-10-10 00:00

CRISTOPHER Jennings rode home to an emphatic victory at the Time Freight Midmar Notts 80 km Cycle Challenge last weekend. The talented 18-year-old, who has risen through the ranks in his formative years, will count this as one of his first major victories.

His time of 1 hour 56 minutes 8 seconds placed him well clear of AC Swanepoel in second in the U16-U23/Elite start. However, the second-fastest time of the day came out of the Veteran 30-49 start as Mark Davel won the sprint finish from Rowan Tyler and Werner Moolman.

The women’s race also ended in a close finish as Isabel Moolman clinched the victory ahead of Pietermaritzburg’s Samantha Serfontein. Third place ended in a split-second sprint, won by veteran Brenda Potts ahead of Kim Caleigh-Brewis and Charmaine McCullum, who all ended on the same time.

The triathlete tandem pairing of Dean Moore and Travis Campbell proved too strong for Jean-Paul van der Linde and Stuart Gower-Jackson, as they broke clear before the turn-point and rode home to victory in 2:01:40.

Philip Krugel took a convincing win in the 30km ride ahead of Keagan Matthews and Kyle Walker. Lauren Hutchinson was first home in the women ahead of Sonya Kritzinger.

Stewart and Knox are Kings of Hilton

The DCM Chrome duo of Brandon Stewart and Max Knox proved their superiority by notching up two out of three stage victories and the overall win in the inaugural Fox Hilton Stage Race last weekend.

Torrential rain, mist and dangerous conditions meant the initial prologue on Thursday was cancelled, but that was of little consequence to the DCM Chrome pair who were so dominant they had the overall victory sewn up within 20km of the first stage.

Once the riders were able to get out on the course, Stewart and Knox broke away early on the opening stage on Friday and effectively won the event by beating Roan Exelby and Donovan Jackson (Fullimput) by seven minutes in the 55 km stage. The Team Jeep combination of Craig Paul and Pete Smith were third.

The opening stage was a tough leg with the race organisers forced into a host of last-minute changes to reroute the field past muddy and impassable sections.

Saturday’s second stage, a 53 km route into the Cedara forest, saw the Team Jeep riders move into second position by winning the stage.

DCM Chrome wrapped up the overall win by cruising to a six-minute victory in the final 40 km stage on Sunday, with Team Jeep consolidating their second position by ending the stage as runners-up.

Tyrone Rawlins and Melanie Palframan claimed the mixed category after Johann Wykerd fell and broke his collarbone while leading that division with Shale Exelby. The top women’s team was Jackie Wolhuter and Tamryn Taylor.

Results – Men Overall: B Stewart / M Knox (DCM chrome) 6:51:02, C Paul / Peter Smith (Team Jeep) 7:07:20, J Tooms / S Ntombela (Life in Motion) 7:32:54, R Exelby / D Jackson (Fullimput) 7:37:01, A McLean / G Anderson (CycleLab) 7:42:27.
