Joyous night for gospel fans

2014-07-25 00:00

JABU Hlongwane, one of the founder members of MTN Joyous Celebration, is looking forward to seeing what Durbanites have to offer in the MTN Conductor Experience competition this weekend.

The winners will get the chance to conduct the multi-award-winning choir when they perform at the ICC in Durban tonight and tomorrow night.

“We always try to do something new for the fans,” the singer told The Witness. “People have been so loyal to Joyous Celebration and we wanted to bridge that divide between the choir and the audience.

“You don’t have to be a professional conductor, we just want fans to have some fun with us on stage. But we are also hoping to expose people to the music industry, even if they can’t sing.”

At this weekend’s concerts, Joyous Celebration will be performing the songs that people will be familiar with, and new material from their 18th album, One Purpose.

Asked if he and his fellow founders, Mthunzi Namba and Lindelani Mkhize, had ever expected the choir to be as successful as it has been, he said they were all humbled by the journey they had been on.

The founders are also determined to give the young choristers a chance to turn their singing talents into solid business opportunities.

“Many of the people in the choir are not well educated, but they can dance and sing, and with that they can create jobs,” he said. “We want to create people who will be able to create jobs, but we need money to do that. These young people need a boost to get a business started.

“We have been doing this for 18 years and in that time, the people who have sung in the choir have been able to earn enough to buy homes, cars and even go and study. We are impacting on futures. I really hope that we will be able to get funding to make this project happen.”

Durban is the third stop on the choir’s One Purpose tour and if previous Joyous Celebration concerts in the city are anything to go by, then gospel fans are in for a joyous night of praise and song.

Tickets range from R180 to R2320 and can be booked at Computicket and Shoprite and Checkers stores.

• To enter the MTN Conductor Experience competition, all MTN PayAsYouGo and TopUp customers stand a chance to co-conduct a song of your choice from the Joyous 18 Album by simply dialing *130*1# and selecting to opt in to the competition then recharging with a minimum of R10 airtime weekly.
