Jub Jub: Hawks spokesperson’s tweet on jail rape causes widespread criticism

2012-10-17 00:00

HAWKS spokesperson Colonel McIntosh Polela had Twitter aflutter last night with a tweet that appeared to predict that kwaito star “Jub Jub” Maarohanye risked being raped in jail.

Maarohanye was convicted of the murder of four schoolboys yesterday and sent to jail ahead of sentencing.

Polela’s tweet: “I trust that JubJub’s supporters gave him a jar of Vaseline to take to prison”, was trending last night.

He said he had never heard of Maarohanye before he and a friend, Themba Tshabalala, were arrested for an accident in which four teens were killed when they were hit by two Mini Coopers drag racing in Soweto.

On inquiry, Polela said he does not comment on what he tweets.

Asked by follower @JosephTshivhase what Vaseline is used for in jails, Polela answered it is to polish special prison shoes.

Not everyone was impressed.

@TOMolefe said: “still no withdrawal or acknowledgement of poor taste. Hawks spokesman @toshpolela is making jokes about rape in jails …”

@SbuMpungose wrote “this is unbecoming of you, sir”.

On his Twitter profile, Polela describes himself as a renowned spokesperson, bestselling author, student of French, firearms fanatic and “literary nerd”.

“My tweets are 4 my tweeps. No publishing.”
