KZN Coastal close on 29 for six

2011-02-25 00:00

THE Provincial Three-Day Challenge match between KZN Inland and South Western Districts is interestingly poised after day one at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Inland overcame uncertainty in the first session to post a very good 285 for four in their first innings, vindicating captain Kyle Nipper’s decision to bat first.

In reply, SWD were on 69 for one at the close, having overcome the early loss of their kingpin and captain Ross McMillan.

With Inland on 72 for three at lunch, the momentum was very much in favour of the visitors, but Glen Addicott and Tim Drummond batted with considerable care, ignoring anything remotely wide and forcing the SWD bowlers to pitch wicket to wicket.

Indeed, if one could fault the visiting attack, they lost their advantage by not attacking the stumps, which allowed Addicott and Drummond enough time to settle down.

Addicott’s due diligence was punctuated with some explosive hitting, including two sixes and a four off a Stephan Grobler over that banished the leg-spinner from SWD’s bowling attack for the rest of the innings.

Disaster struck Inland’s star batsman when just 10 runs short of what would have been a superb century — the contentious lbw decision an unlucky twist of fate.

His fourth-wicket partnership with Drummond was worth 127 and the wicket keeper’s unbeaten 76 was studded with sufficient quality.

Meanwhile, in a most bizarre occurrence on the opening day of a first-class match, KZN Coastal — on being put in to bat by Boland in Paarl — declared their first innings closed on 29 for six, their strong top order destroyed in 10.5 overs.

Coastal skipper Khaya Zondo’s side then blasted Boland out for a first innings 160 in 41 overs and duly proceeded to 151 for four in their second dig to lead by 20 runs with six wickets intact.

It boggles the mind as to what exactly went on at Boland Park.
