KZN Coastal in driver’s seat after day one of Three-Day Challenge

2011-02-11 00:00

THERE was no doubt who held the winning hand after day one of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match between visitors KZN Coastal and homeboys KZN Inland at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

After winning an important toss, Coastal compiled 355 for five in their 85 first innings overs, to which Inland replied with 15 for one at the close, losing first-class debutant Nic Hendrie to a smart catch at second slip by Matthew Hulett off quick bowler Byron Whatmore.

A 191-run opening partnership at close to four runs an over and the run-a-ball 102 for the fourth wicket were the mainstays of Coastal’s imposing total. Both contained a high proportion of boundaries.

Divan van Wyk manufactured a superb 152 in six hours off 247 balls with 16 fours and a six. Opening partner and Coastal captain Khaya Zondo’s four-hour 97 came off 161 deliveries and included 14 fours and two sixes, while Hulett’s bristling 57 off 45 balls was studded with four fours and four sixes.

Van Wyk went through the nervous nineties as Inland spinners Tyler Lortan, captain Kyle Nipper and Mbasa Gqadushe asked questions of him. Indeed, the jitters set in when Brady Barends took a good catch at mid-on to dismiss Nashen Govender off Nipper.

The 10-over spell that saw Coastal lose three wickets for 25 was the best-rewarded patch of play for the home side. Other than that, it was plain sailing for Zondo’s lads, although things might have been different had the opener not been dropped twice in one over from fast bowler Kimeshan Chetty before he was properly set.

Nipper tried everything in the book, the only Inland players who didn’t bowl being Hendrie, Glen Addicott and wicketkeeper Tim Drummond.

After the three-dayer concludes tomorrow, the 40-over bash starts on Sunday at 10 am.
