KZN Coastals trump Southerns to take provincial men’s hockey title

2009-08-24 00:00

TWO goals conceded just after the half-time break at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf on Saturday turned the tables on National Men’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament finalists Southern Gauteng and enabled KZN Coastals to win the Men’s IPT Shield, writes JONATHAN COOK.

Hardly a minute after the start, Coastals captain Wade Paton drilled goal number one past Southerns’ goalkeeper Marc de Jager, and three minutes later Bruce Grant came in from the left half berth to smack a stinger past the despairing De Jager.

Both sides were highly motivated, but even more so as Southerns hadn’t won an IPT since 2000 while Coastals’ last hurrah was three years ago.
