KZN Dunlop Challenge brings out the best in young tennis players

2013-07-17 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Dunlop Challenge, a Tennis South Africa national tournament and part of the KeyHealth Series, took place at Westridge Park Stadium in Durban recently.

The Open singles was won by the unseeded Stefan Fortmann of KZN, who beat top seed Reinhardt Trollip of Gauteng North in straight sets (6-2 6-4) in the final.

The Open doubles final was a cliff-hanger, with Lance Cohen and Waylon Ferrandi of KZN edging out Fortmann and Keegan Foss, also of KZN, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.

The age-group boys’ singles finals were pretty straightforward affairs for the winners, other than the battle between two Free Staters for the U14 title.

George Botha, the sixth seed, beat fellow Free State player and No. 7 seed Philip Henning 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, the first two sets close affairs before Botha outplayed Henning in the third and deciding set.

In the Boys’ U16 doubles final, St Charles College’s Nikolai Manchev and Jandre Lessing of Eastern Province, the third seeds, beat second seeds Michael Copeland and Clayton Herb of Gauteng Central 6-1, 6-1.
