KZN Elandslaagte war site monument damaged

2010-06-25 00:00

VANDALISM at KwaZulu-Natal’s battlefields continues. The latest site to be affected is the Anglo-Boer War site of Elandslaagte near Ladysmith, where the Dutch memorial was badly damaged when vandals removed one side of the memorial.

“It appears that whoever did this was under the misguided impression that there is treasure buried under the memorials,” says James van Vuuren, deputy director of Amafa, the provincial heritage agency.

“This is tiresome, as at least two memorials a year are vandalised in this way. We have a limited monuments maintenance budget as it is, and essential work at other sites suffers as a result.”

The battle of Elandslaagte took place on October 21, 1899, and claimed about 600 British and Boerlives.

The memorial was erected by citizens of the Netherlands in memory of the volunteer Dutch Corps who fought for the Boers against the British during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902.

Van Vuuren appealed to anyone with information to contact Amafa. “Amafa offers a reward for information leading to the conviction of vandals”.
